Getting to Malta

In the main the Maltese islands are usually accessed by air. Malta is well served from most countries in Europe both by AirMalta the local airline as well as low-cost airlines such as RyanAir and others. Malta is only a short plane ride from anywhere in Europe. The plane lands at the Malta International Airport - near where Luqa Airport used to be - on the main island of Malta.

A very large and fast catamaran ferry operates every day from Pozzallo in Sicily to Malta. This crossing takes only about 1½ hours and the catamaran is large enough to transport a lot of cars. This transport service has now
been extended to Catania and Messina.

There is also a normal ferry service between Naples and Malta.

Malta is a member of the European Union so all EU citizens are allowed unhindered access to the islands. A valid Identity card is considered to be a valid travel document. Malta is also a member of the Schengen agreement.

A normal passport is required from other non EU countries.

As of the 1st of January 2008, Malta adopted the Euro as its legal coinage.

Getting to Gozo
Once you are in Malta the main way of getting to Gozo is by the fast and frequent ferry link. There usually is a ferry every 45 minutes. The ferry plies between the ports of Cirkewwa - on the North-
ernmost coast of Malta - for Mgarr on the south coast of Gozo. The crossing only lasts 25 minutes. The cheap return ticket can be bought from the ticketing booth at the ferry place. There is a complementary secure baggage facility there as well, so incoming visitors can leave their bags there and travel with peace of mind. The baggage can then be retrieved in Gozo when the crossing is over.

The ferries themselves are locally built, are very large and very modern. During the crossing the ferry passes very close to the island of Comino which lies in the middle of the channel - well worth a look if you are travelling during daylight hours.

Cirkewwa (the Gozo-ferry port) can be accessed either by the Airport - Cirkewwa shuttle bus - the tickets for which can be bought on the bus itself. The bus will be just outside the Airport Arrivals lounge, or by taxi from the airport - this can be quite expensive!

For those who prefer it we can also arrange a direct transfer from the airport to Cirkewwa (and vice versa) for our clients. The cost for this return service will be much cheaper than taking a taxi both ways!

For those who do not fancy the ferry, then there is a faster way of crossing to Gozo! Just get to the Valletta waterfront and take a Harbour Air Malta sea-plane (an Otter) trip costing just 70 Euros (roughly £56) and
which will land you in Mgarr Harbour just 9 minutes later! If you would like to come using this means then we can book you seats with no charge on the service!
